I love a sunrise or sunset. The way the colors gently blend from one to another. Nature’s own gradient and it’s magical. I think that’s why I like knitting with gradients. Watching the colors slowly change while you knit, is mesmerizing. Apparently, I like gradients a lot because four of my designs use gradients or slow color changing yarns.
The first, was Joyful Crescent. It uses one skein of Freia Fibers Ombre Fingering Shawl Ball and Blue Sky Super Sparkle. The gradient, is used in the large chevron lace pattern and slowly changes throughout the shawl. The Blue Sky Super Sparkle adds a bit of glam.
My second design that uses a gradient is the cowl, Diamond X. It uses the slow changing yarn Dyed in The Wool from Spincycle for the colorwork. It’s a way of changing color without using numerous colored skeins of yarn.
Love Blossoms, uses Wonderland Blossoms Mad Hatter Sport in a slow changing gradient that moves from cream to dark charcoal. The lace pattern remains the same but the colors changing make it interesting. The version on the right below, was knit for my local yarn shop and is much more colorful. It’s knit up in Laines du Nord Poema Nuance. Love Blossoms has quickly become my best selling pattern!
My latest design, Kiwi, also uses Freia Fibers Ombre Fingering Shawl ball. Slowly changing from a chartreuse to a deep blue, the easy eyelet pattern becomes so much more when knit up in a gradient.
I don’t have any designs in the works that use gradients but you can be certain it is something I’ll return to in the future.
